Best Essential Oils For Headaches

Read this post to learn what are some of the best essential oils for headaches and how to use them. I’ve been plagued by strong headaches and migraines since I was a teen. In fact I never had a headache in my life, believe it or not, until a few weeks after the Chernobyl disaster. We were living south of the place in a neighboring country, and as it happened, we had a strong wind coming our way bringing all that contaminated dust and air directly to our mountains – where I was living.

essential oils for headaches

I had my first cluster headache just a short few weeks after. It was nerve wracking and so unusual for me. Sure, all this could be a coincidence, but fact is, headaches and migraines have become a major part of my life ever since.

From the time I started to work with essential oils in aromatherapy and for using them in the oil burner and in baths at night, I’ve learned quite a few things about these wonderful oils, and about which oils do seem to work to relieve my headaches. Not all oils work equally well, that’s another thing I’ve learned. Some help better than others. While this might not be the most exhaustive list, at least it’s also not a list copied from other websites (that are also copied from others…you get the idea). This is really a list of my own oils that I use to relieve my headaches (see picture above).

Now headaches and migraines are not quite the same thing. Some people have constant headaches and have never had a migraine in their life (lucky them!). Others have regular migraines, but not many actual headaches – and others, like me, suffer from both.

When I use some of the essential oils listed below, they do help better with headaches, I have to admit. They only help with a migraine when the actual migraine hasn’t already set in. There is that moment when you kind of feel that a migraine will come…it’s at the edge of your consciousness, but it’s not quite there. If I use the essential oils around that time, if I catch that ‘not quite yet here’ moment, the migraine in many cases doesn’t even happen.

For actual headaches these oils help even when I already experience the pain, regardless if the headaches is tension headache, stress caused headache, or a simple general headache with unknown reason.

So here goes…

Best Essential Oils For Headaches That Work Well For Me

  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Peppermint

While I have quite a few essential oils at home, the best ones I found to work are the above 5. I can either use them separately, or together in a wonderful oil blend with a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil or even fractionated coconut oil (something which I’ve started using recently).

What I found works best is when I use the oil blend I created rather than using the oils separately, I guess because of the synergy the blend creates between the oils themselves.

Here is my personal recipe. You can adjust the dose as you see fit, or even experiment with adding your own oils if you don’t have some of these or you find something else that works better.

How To Make Your Own Essential Oil Blend For Headaches

Add 4 tbsp of your carrier oil of choice to a dark glass (never use light colored or transparent glasses to store your essential oils in)

Next add: 3 drops lavender oil, 4 drop frankincense oil, 2 drops peppermint oil, 5 drops roman chamomile oil and 3 drops of eucalyptus.

Some people like to add more drops of lavender essential oil, however I found that if I add more than 2-3 for such a small blend, instead of calming me down and relaxing me, it actually makes it a bit irritable and edgy, it really wakes me up, and that’s not what I want for a lingering headache.

I add more drops of frankincense as I truly love its healing properties, and in fact I’ve started to use this particular oil overall more than others (even in my bath) because of its anticancer properties. As I have a few thyroid nodules that doctor’s don’t know yet for sure whether they’re benign or not, I am using frankincense as a means of precaution really – but I also love its smell a lot.

Also roman chamomile is such a relaxing and healing essential oil, I love it. I used to love chamomile ever since I was a kid when my mom was giving me chamomile tea for anything that bothered me – from stomach upset to eye problems (in the form of applying with a cotton ball over the eye), or with stress and irritation.

How To Apply The Essential Oil Blend

Well there are 3 main ways I use these oils.

First I apply a few drops of the blend on my forehead, massaging it lightly in. Next, I also add a few of these drops in my oil burner for breathing it in while working. Finally when I take bath, if I happen to have headache that day, these are the very oils I use instead of another combination.

Sometimes I even use a few drops and massage it over my entire scalp (focusing on the area that hurts mostly, especially if it’s not the temple area).

Some additional essential oils for headaches that I’ve been experimenting with (not quite with the same results, but still, worth trying if the above blend doesn’t do much for you, I guess, because everyone is different, we react to different things, and our metabolism is different as well) are: rosemary, clove (btw clove is PERFECT for toothaches!), geranium and cinnamon.

How are you using your essential oils for headaches and what oils work best for you?

This is great! I started using oils last year. I don’t think I recognize this brand? How does it compare?

    • Marika says:

This is a brand I’ve been using from the UK. I buy many oils from Amazon, but sometimes when I’m in a hurry, since I live in Europe, I get the oils shipped faster if I buy from them.

  2. Milena says:

Awesome info: I’m always looking for alternative solutions in healing. Plus I love the “how to” on how to use oils. Nice!

  3. Peppermint oil works the best for me. I can’t stand the smell of eucalyptus anything, it smells like anesthesia to me (said the woman who has had more surgeries than she can count).

    • Marika says:

OH so sorry to hear about your surgeries :(
I totally get what you’re saying about eucalyptus. For me myrrh was for the longest time something that I never could stand. Strangely enough that has changed since recently, not quite sure why and how, but now i actually enjoy it smell. Go figure.

  4. Susan says:

I have never used essential oils for headaches, but I could see how smells would make a difference. I will have to try this next time I have a headache.

    • Marika says:

Oh it is not only about the smell – which is only a small part of the benefits of essential oils. They all have healing properties by themselves due to their chemical composition – even the carrier oils, which don’t have a smell at all.

I swear by peppermint, that is my all-time favorite. It’s perfect for stress headaches especially! Really helps clear that mental fog that settles in around 2pm. I’ve had chronic headaches since I was a teenager too. My doctor asked me how often I have headaches. I said the better question would be how often do I NOT have them.

  12. I have found peppermint does wonders for me. It also makes me very happy!

  13. I have been using essential oils lately and I have to say they really do work! I really had no idea what they were for just a few months ago!

I love using essential oils. I have never tried the blend you are speaking of, but I will have to remember this. I get headaches on a regular basis and I would rather use something natural to get rid of them.

  23. What can I substitute for Lavender? I’m allergic, but I do have terrible migraines and definitely want to try this natural remedy. Most of the ones I find have lavender in them, and I need to find a substitute for that essential oil.

  24. Kero says:

lavender and peppermint are my ultimate favorite essential oils along with mandarin. i went for a much needed spa body scrub yesterday and it started with an inhale of peppermint. I was immediately relaxed and a slight headache shooed away. after 30 minytes, the lavender oil was lulling me to sleep!

Will bookmark your post. thank you for sharing!

  26. Sarah Bailey says:

I’m actually sat here with a hell of a head ache I’m going to pop off and look in the cupboard now and see if I can find one or two of these. x

  27. thank you, I need to check this out because I keep getting a lot of headaches. Can you take these while breastfeeding do you know?

    • Marika says:

There are some that are not especially recommended while breastfeeding, but as I don’t have children, I really don’t know about that aspect, never researched it indepth. To be sure, however, it is better to avoid them while you are breastfeeding, just in case.
